Configuring MS Outlook 2003

The below guide is aimed at MS Outlook 2003.

(Older versions apparently do not support SSL connections).

If you're feeling brave you can just read the generic e-mail settings by clicking here.

Firstly, bring up e-mail accounts by clicking 'Tools' > 'E-mail Accounts' as shown below

There are 2 main ways to access your email in Outlook, 'POP3' and 'IMAP'.

When your email arrives at your domain name it is stored on the bucklehosting servers for you.

Using bucklehosting webmail you can check your email from anywhere in the world at any time.

If you use POP3 in Outlook, when you check for mail it will be downloaded to your computer and removed from the bucklehosting server. This means that if you later log into webmail the email will not appear but will be on your computer.

If you use IMAP in Outlook, you can check for mail and leave it on the bucklehosting server this means that despite using Outlook to check your mail, webmail will still have all the same emails and folders. This is the recommended mode of email account usage.

To continue setting up an IMAP account, click 'IMAP' followed by 'Next' as shown below:

Additonal - Configuring Sent items folder.
In pre-Outlook 2007 world all sent-items are automatically copied into the shared 'sent items' folder instead of your IMAP 'Sent' folder.
This means your sent email is stored not on the IMAP filestore (accessible via webmail etc.) but on your local computer.

To change this please follow the below steps:

Navigate to Tools->Rules and Alerts.

Find the 'E-mail Rules' tab.

Press 'New Rule'

Select 'Start from a blank rule'
Select 'Check messages after sending.'
Click on Next.

On the next page tick 'on this machine only' and press 'next':

On the next screen select 'Move a copy to the specified folder'

Under the 'step 2' section click 'specified folder' and choose the folder of your choice (the IMAP sent folder). Click ok.

Click 'next' twice more, make sure 'enable this rule' is selected.
Click 'finish' and 'ok' and you're done!
